FLP Students Travel to New York City
May 10, 2024 – Brewer Foundation Future Leaders Program (FLP) students traveled from Dallas to New York City in May to tour college campuses and attend the Brewer Foundation / NYU International Public Policy Forum debate finals.
This year, 35 FLP students earned the opportunity to participate in the annual trip by having perfect attendance – a celebration of their commitment and dedication to the program.
During the four day trip, students toured Yale University, where they visited the University’s art gallery and engaged with senior students – asking questions about their college experience. They also took part in a tour of a Fordham University.
Between campus visits, students were given time to walk through the city streets and explore key sites, including Times Square. They also took the Staten Island Ferry, which is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. These activities provided an opportunity for students to bond and strengthen the friendships they have developed during their years in the FLP.
On Saturday, the students attended the IPPF Final Debate, which was judged by Brewer Foundation Chairman William A. Brewer III. They watched high school teams from Texas and Georgia debate the topic, "Resolved: Governments should provide a universal basic income." Founded by the Brewer Foundation in 2001, the IPPF is the first and only competition that gives students an opportunity to participate in written and oral debates on issues of public policy.
The students closed out their trip by having dinner with FLP alumnae Mayra Salinas, a first-generation Latina coach and educator. Mayra was a member of the FLP’s Class of 2010 and has acted as a mentor to FLP students, helping to support their transition to college.
