Community Service: Future Leaders Bring Holiday Cheer to Families in Need

November 23, 2024 — Students from the Brewer Foundation Future Leaders Program (FLP) brought the holiday spirit to members of the community this weekend — helping to distribute turkey and other items during the DeSoto Gives Thanks event.

"Some people cannot afford to buy Thanksgiving food because it's tight around their homes," said FLP student Jaide Crawford. "So, we're just here working with them, giving them food, drinks, and stuff like that."

This was the third consecutive year that the FLP has partnered with The Mint Foundation to engage in community service and help those in need.

"I don't have memories of doing things like what these students are doing," said FLP Teacher Alvaro Ramos. "I think it's amazing that these kids know what it looks like to roll up their sleeves and get in and help."

"I feel accomplished because we've done something," said Crawford. "Even if it means saying 'Happy Thanksgiving' to people, putting a smile on everybody's faces. They can go home and, if they have kids, they can go home and say, 'We have a Thanksgiving meal today.'"

Founded in 2001 by the Brewer Foundation, the charitable arm of Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors, the FLP is an academic and leadership development program for select students from urban communities within the Dallas Independent School District (DISD).

Through year-round academic courses, leadership training, and exposure to a wide array of cultural programs, the FLP helps prepare its “future leaders” for success in college and beyond.
