Famed Educator Shirley Ison-Newsome Honors FLP Students
April 29, 2023 – Famed Dallas Independent School District educator and community leader Shirley Ison-Newsome recently addressed the Future Leaders Program senior class. Dr. Ison-Newsome participated in the FLP Senior Recognition Day, honoring the students for their academic achievement and college admissions. Eight FLP seniors have been awarded more than $3 million in awards and scholarships, with plans to attend Cornell University, Northwestern University, and Brown University, to name a few.

Dr. Ison-Newsome spent more than 40 years as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator with DISD, retiring as an Assistant Superintendent. She initiated numerous projects and programs while at DISD, including a major member of the planning team for the District’s nationally-recognized Magnet Schools, the renowned Learning Centers, and the development of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, she matriculated at Indiana University – Bloomington, Indiana; the University of Louisville – Louisville, Kentucky; and The Ohio State University – Columbus, Ohio.
Dr. Ison-Newsome challenged the FLP graduates to dream big, exhibit leadership skills, and always rely upon their personal networks for support and strength. Dr. Ison-Newsome also challenged the students to serve as role models – “using your education to not only help yourself, but to also effect change in your communities.”
