Alfredo Fuentes is a QuestBridge National College Match Scholar and an alumni of the Future Leaders Program (FLP) Class of 2025. He first joined FLP in Seventh Grade.
This fall, he will begin his college journey at Boston University, where he will study computer science on a full scholarship. Alfredo sat down with Erica Salazar, an intern at Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors to highlight his Questbridge process.

About the National College Match
The National College Match, organized and funded by QuestBridge, is a scholarship program that “matches” high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds to some of the nation’s top schools. Students who are matched with colleges receive a full, 4-year scholarship.
How does matching work?
First, you first need to apply by submitting an application that includes essays, transcripts, and recommendation letters—like your college applications. If you are selected as a finalist, you will then rank 15 partner schools by your order of preference. Each of your ranked schools will then receive your QuestBridge application to use for their admissions decision.
The finalist selection is competitive, and there is a chance you may not match with a school, however even if you're not matched, students can still use their application to apply through other rounds at partner schools.
Alfredo’s Journey
1. What made you apply to QuestBridge?
I learned about QuestBridge through FLP, which encouraged us to explore scholarship opportunities. Seeing FLP alumni succeed through QuestBridge inspired me, and with FLP’s support, I felt confident in applying.
2. What was the QuestBridge process like?
The process is intense, but having a clear timeline helped me stay on track. Here’s what it looked like for me:
Summer before senior year– After learning about the Scholarship, I gathered information and began to work on my application essays.
September – I submitted the National College Match application, which included multiple essays, short responses, transcripts, and teacher recommendations.
October – I was thrilled to be selected as a finalist. Because of this, I could submit applications to my top-choice partner schools.
November – I ranked Boston University as one of my top choices and submitted the required supplemental materials for the match.
December – I got the news that I was accepted to Boston University on a full ride!
3. How did you prepare for your essays while balancing school?
I drew inspiration from my family, community, and experiences in FLP. To balance all my applications and schoolwork, I created a schedule, broke essays into sections, and used weekends to write. FLP mentors and teachers reviewed my drafts, provided feedback and helped keep me on track.
4. What are your tips for high school students applying to QuestBridge?
Start early – The application is long and requires deep reflection, so give yourself time to write, revise, and gather recommendations.
Tell your authentic story – Share your real experiences, challenges, and growth. Be authentic!
Use your resources – Teachers, counselors, and programs like FLP can give you feedback and help you polish your application.
Stay organized – Keep a checklist for deadlines, supplemental materials, and essays so nothing gets overlooked.
