Winter break is the perfect time to finish up college applications and take a well-deserved rest.

Winter break can feel like a strange-in-between: school is finally on pause, but deadlines, essays, and break assignments are looming in the background. The good news is you don’t have to choose between resting and being productive. With a little planning, you can make meaningful progress on your college applications and still return in January feeling refreshed. If you haven’t gotten much done yet, don’t panic, there’s still plenty of time to make the most of your winter break.

Here is a realistic, low-stress approach to make the most of your winter break.

Start by mapping out the time you have left

Before you start cranking out your assignments and applications, take a moment to answer three questions:

  1. When are my application deadlines?

  2. What assignments do I have to complete before the break ends?

  3. Which days can I focus on work?

Now you can decide which days you will need to spend focusing on work to complete your most important tasks without feeling overwhelmed. It can also help to carve out the same chunk of time on each of those days, giving you a set routine for when you will be working.

Make a “Top 3” list for applications

Applications are less stressful when you have your priorities aligned. Choose your top three tasks to finish before break is over and hold yourself accountable on finishing them. This could include:

  1. Finish drafts of remaining essays

  2. Confirm letters of recommendation were submitted

  3. Complete scholarship applications (check out our newest Weekend Scholarship Watch for some easy to complete applications!)

  4. Submit any finished applications

Even if you only finish the three things on your list, not only are you making progress, but separating tasks by priority level ensures you get your most important tasks done.

Start with just 10 minutes

It can be hard to feel motivated during break, and getting started is often the hardest part. On days when motivation is low, start with just 10 minutes. Begin with an easier task to help build momentum. These could include:

  1. Updating your calendar

  2. Beginning a new paragraph

  3. Revising an essay

Schedule guilt free breaks

Rest isn’t just something you do after finishing your work; it is also what helps you work better! Choosing intentional rest while you work will help you recharge and avoid burnout.  While it is important to meet those deadlines, remember you're still on break and deserve to rest.  Choose a couple of rest practices that you’ll intentionally use such as:

  1. Taking short walks or getting fresh air

  2. Spending time with family or friends

  3. Taking personal time to enjoy your favorite show or book

If you’re feeling stressed or behind, take a deep breath and re-assess. You shouldn’t feel guilty for resting. There is still time for you to finish what you want to accomplish!

Winter break doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Even small steps forward count, and rest is just as important as productivity. By being intentional with your time and remembering to rest, you can end your break feeling accomplished, recharged, and ready to start the new year.
